Balancing wildlife populations and biodiversity: Pillars of effective national park management”
taking place on 23 April at 16:00 in the European Parliament (from 16:00 to 17:30, Room A5E-3)

Registration is required

Objective of the Conference: National parks are a fundamental tool for conserving biodiversity and ensuring the protection of ecosystems. Many are also part of Europe’s Natura 2000 Network of protected areas. In this context, their management often requires a delicate balance between conservation and human activities.

This event aims to explore the implications of wildlife management approaches in European national parks, their impact on biodiversity management, and the perspectives of key stakeholders, including landowners, conservationists, and policymakers. In recent years, a controversy has emerged regarding the management approaches and models of national parks in Europe.

The discussion will focus on:

  • The role of the Natura 2000 Network in promoting biodiversity conservation.
  • The role of sustainable wildlife management and its contribution to biodiversity conservation.
  • The consequences of restricting wildlife management in protected areas, resulting in the potential overpopulation of certain species and disruptions to ecosystem balance.
  • The challenges faced by landowners and local communities who rely on traditional land management practices.
  • The importance of science-based policies in ensuring effective national park management.

Through a roundtable discussion and documentary screening featuring experts from the European Commission, conservation organizations, and affected stakeholders, the event will provide a comprehensive view on the current challenges and potential solutions for balancing conservation with responsible land use
