LIFE WildWolf: Protective vests for hunting dogs

As part of the LIFE Wild Wolf project, the first protective vests for hunting dogs were distributed in Croatia.

This initiative aims to protect hunting dogs from potential encounters with wolves and other wild animals. The protective vests are designed to reduce injuries during hunting, particularly in areas where wolves are present.

In this context, a study was launched to assess the effectiveness of these protective vests. Over the next two years, 300 hunting dogs from four counties in the Dalmatian region will participate. The study will involve local hunters, who will not only participate but also contribute to improving the design of the vests based on their experience in the field.

Hunters will evaluate the vests’ impact on the hunting dogs, as it is crucial to ensure that the vests provide adequate protection without hindering the dogs’ performance during hunting. Feedback from the hunters will help refine the vests, potentially leading to improved versions tailored to different terrains or hunting conditions. The study is expected to provide valuable insights into how protective gear can enhance safety while maintaining the performance and agility of hunting dogs.

This project represents a collaborative effort between wildlife conservation professionals and the hunting community, aiming for both coexistence and sustainable hunting practices. The Croatian Hunting Association took the lead in coordinating the distribution of protective vests, working closely with hunters across the Dalmatian region. This initiative was supported by FACE, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and DOGTECH. This collaboration has been instrumental in driving the study forward, ensuring that both practical field experience and scientific insights are integrated to improve the safety and effectiveness of hunting practices in wolf areas.
