30 Apr 2023 FACE’s database on huntable birds
To contribute to policy dialogues about the sustainability of hunting of bird species in the EU, FACE uses a variety of scientific evidence. A significant source of information regarding the EU resides in the State of Nature 2020 data sets, and in particular the reporting exercise under the Birds Directive (Article 12).
Here FACE provides parts of these assessments as well as other useful information related to hunting of bird species in the EU to facilitate access to EU data sets for European hunters, policy makers and other stakeholders.
The information provided here are subset of the EU Article 12 data sets and were treated to ease straightforward grasp by the user, to find the original datasets, click here.
1 – THE EU POPULATION ESTIMATES, STATUS AND TRENDS OF HUNTABLE BIRDS
The Birds Directive (Article 12) requires Member States to report every 6 years on the status and trends of bird species. The last cycle of reporting (2013-2018) provided these national assessments which were used but the European Commission to produce EU population estimates, trends and status for bird species.
This data base provides these results for EU’s huntable birds (Annex II of the Birds Directive).

2 – THE EU HARVEST DATA
The collection of harvest (or bag) data plays a significant role in understanding wild game populations and providing a basis for management decisions, e.g., used as an index for population densities or to assess the impact and sustainability of hunting. While there are long-term records of hunting bag statistics in Europe, the methodologies for data collection vary between countries.
In order to centralise harvest data at the European level, the last reporting exercise under the Birds Directive (Article 12) required Member States, for the first time, to report on national harvest for the period 2013-2018.
This data base provides the harvests for each nationally huntable bird species reported by each Member States
